koi-pond-in-city-gardenTraditionally, Carp or a little more recently, Koi have been one of the symbols of wealth.

Today, Koi is used as a favourite wealth enhancer mainly because it it the symbolic carp and the beautiful vibrant colours that it has bringing beautiful yang energy to itself.

This tradition is rooted in the distant past where the fish, especially the carp is symbolic of wealth, currency, success, wedded bliss.

Here are some of the more popular uses or beliefs with the use of fish in Feng Shui;japanese-koi-pedigree

1) Pair of Carps at the entrance of the house symbolizes scholarly success especially to the children as they leave each day ( there is the legend of the dragon carp - little carps go up a fast river symbolizing going through the dragon gates; then return as dragon carps - this is really the story of a spawning cycle of carps and als of the ancient river sturgeon).

2) Pair of Carps given as a gift during a couple’s wedding symbolizes marital bliss and success with many children (carps are prolific reproducers).

3) Keeping 9 live carps - 8 colourful and mostly red with one all black (to absorb the bad energies) ensures great wealth to accumulate in the household. Large compounds with larger ponds often keep fish in multiples of nines for added wealth accumulation.

Some tips for keeping live carp or koi;

*Make sure your pond is large enough to keep the number of planned fish.

*The pond will require a deep portion of at least 1.3 meters deep or about 4 feet - up to 10 feet is better for the large ponds.

*A shallow area will show off the fish as they come to you to be fed - really good karma/energy.

*A protected shallow area (from the fish) of about 0.65 mters or 2 feet with great flowering plants like lotus and water lilies in a tub will give great yang energy and beauty.

*A waterfall or seperate mini pond or both will help the water tp settle and aerate.

*Pump and filtration system - must be powerful enough to handle the job.

*If water will freeze in winter, get an aerator or heater ring to keep your water open to the air - your koi will need it to survive the winter.

*Take in and protect your plants for the winter.

*Ask a pro for help.
